Rugby Tri Nations 2008 (R2) – All Blacks vs. South Africa – Part 1/7

Part 1/7 – Round 2 – Carisbrook, Dunedin – July 12, 2008. South Africa had never won a Test match in Dunedin in 87 years and when they travelled down south in July 2008 they did so a few days after losing 19-8 to the All Blacks in Wellington. It required some belief to think that they could end their Carisbrook jinx in those circumstances, yet an extraordinary Test match ensued. True, it was dominated by kicking, Dan Carter landing six penalties, a drop goal and conversion for the All Blacks against five penalty goals, a drop goal and conversion by the Springbok kickers, Percy Montgomery, Butch James and Frans Steyn. With seven minutes left, New Zealand led 28-23 and South Africa had their captain Victor Matfield sin-binned for a high tackle. It looked all over for the Springboks until little scrum half Ricky Januarie broke from a ruck on the New Zealand 10 metre line, found open space, chipped over the last defender, re-gathered and dived over to score. Frans Steyn’s nerveless conversion put South Africa ahead and they held on, Carter missing a late drop goal which would have won the game. Full match, final score: 28-30 (HT: 15-17)
